The Vagabond’s Story: Time to Answer the Travel Call

Hello, and welcome to Writing Vagabond.

Now let’s navigate this new blogger’s journey, shall we? I’m Lydia; you can see where I’ve been and get more info on it on my Destinations page. Let’s all start at the beginning… It kept calling me. Screaming in my head! Begging me to go. Over and over.

If you’re here, you’ve probably heard it too—that faint, persistent, and incredibly annoying little voice. The one that pipes up when you’re loading the dishwasher. Or when staring at a spreadsheet. Whispering: “There’s a whole world out there, you know.”

That’s the ”Travel Call.” And if you’ve had it and didn’t pick up? Trust me, it just goes to voicemail. And it will call back.

I silently answered back in 2018. This site is my “thank you” out loud. Sharing is caring, as I say. It’s time to give back to the world!

My Story: From Quitting Everything to Living on the Road

Hi, I’m Lydia, and I’m looking forward to connecting with you.

The best way to tell you my story is through this blog. And through the messy yet wonderful travel life I’ve been living since 2018. I made one radical change back then: I quit everything that wasn’t serving me anymore and hit the road. Bye-bye Canada, hello international Lydia.

I always thought it was impossible. It’s not. I’m living proof of it.

I’m sharing this now because its golden information for anyone in that same hesitating position. Because these stories need to be told, so they matter more.

The Vagabond's journey started
Writer behind Writing Vagabond in Montréal’s airport back in 2018. Only 2 small backpacks, 1 big fear of being alone and 0 idea it will last 8 years and counting!

Why Writing Vagabond?

I created Writing Vagabond for everyone who feels tugged between the urge to explore and the practical need to. Well, have a normal life and pay the bills. I’m not a millionaire travel influencer. Really not. I’m a person who believes you have to go see the world to find yourself. At least to decide for yourself what lifestyle you want to live. Life is amazing. Life is rough. And life is especially long if you are an average, healthy human. Better try to spend it in a way that suits you.

My goal is to help other travellers navigate the world smartly and sustainably. Even if not on a tiny budget.

We’ll talk about:

  • Van Living (& Backpacking)
  • Travel Guides (with and without a dog. I share my experiences to give out accurate information only)
  • Travel Stories (Mine, Karma’s, real life events & some creative writing here and there)
  • Dog Travel (How I brought Karma to 44 countries in 6 years in early 2026)
  • And eventually, the grand plot twist: moving to Panama. (Yes, seriously. I’m deep in the research rabbit hole as we speak. More on that soon! If the plan doesn’t change… as it always does!)

What’s the Plan?

There’s actually no need for a plan. Just a start and a teeny-weeny bit of courage. Please nourish that little seed you planted when you were a kid. It’s always possible to get out there, even with very little money. It’s not about earning a fortune; it’s about spending consciously and embracing experiences over things. Work abroad, volunteer, trade skills, apply for visas—the paths are there. I’ll hold your hand if you need it. The world is surprisingly affordable when you step off the tourist treadmill.

This journey is about finding what works for you. And maybe coming back home (wherever that is) grateful for what you have. Bringing back a head, a heart, and a body filled with memories. Tattoos rather than scars, but both are highly possible!

Now, Let’s Go!

I will slowly but surely publish content on these themes. If any of it sparks your curiosity, I invite you to contact me. Maybe we can figure it out together. We have the best adventures when we share them. Shout out to the story of Christopher McCandless for that truth. And if you haven’t read or watched Into the Wild yet, consider this your sign.

So, stay posted, people. Someone has answered the ”Travel Call”. Let’s see where it leads.

P.S.: If your inner freedom phone is ringing for you too—pick up.

Life is a one-time offer, and you’re using it well.

Well said! The “one-time offer” actually reminds me of the first verse of Eminem’s “Lose Yourself”:

“If you had one shot, or one opportunity
To seize everything you ever wanted in one moment
Would you capture it, or just let it slip?”

I heard the rhythm in my head just now — did you?

Don't be shy!
